Every month we sit down with one of our amazing ABA members to get to know them a little better! For August, wespoke with Heather Dominick. We ask each member the same questions, providing an opportunity for our members to highlight the important work that they do in our communities. Q:  Tell us about your business?

A:  I provide design services and hand craft custom made home decor, journals, stickers and greeting cards.

Q: Tell us about yourself:

A: Starting the business ten years ago allowed me to put family first while still indulging in my passion and creativity as an artist.

I’ve been a resident of Alton for over twenty years with my husband Toby, and our two children. In my spare time I paint, brainstorm new ideas with my daughter, snap photos with my son while chasing the sunsets on the lake and enjoy time on my kayak in our gorgeous local waterways.

Q:  How did your business get started?

A:  I’ve over 25 years of experience in the graphic and print industry, when our youngest arrived we quickly realized one of us needed to be home with him. As a result, this business was born with our family’s needs in mind back in 2013.

Q:  What has your relationship with the Alton Business Association done for you or
your business?

A:  While I’ve lived in Alton and operated a small business here for years, no one really knew I was here. The ABA has been a great resource for assisting in marketing my business and helping to find other local businesses. So much so, that I am now serving on the Board of Directors giving me the chance to give back to my community.

Q:  What do you value most about this community?

A:  Alton is an amazing place to live, both geographical and for it’s people. Alton takes care of it’s own and that is one of the major things that makes this place special.

Q: Why did you want to open your business in this community?

A:  This business started here simply because we live here and it made sense to do so. Over the years it has evolved and focus has slightly changed, but the one constant thing to remain is home. Alton is home.

Q: What business accomplishment are you most proud of?

A:  I think I would have to say how we’ve adapted over the years. Most recently when Covid shut down everything around us I mostly stopped doing restaurant menus and promotional print materials for other local businesses. I often say that this is a “one woman” show over here, but I would not have gotten this far if it weren’t for my husband. His help, support and constant lessons in all things power tools have vastly contributed to me being able to design, produce and sell the home decor that I now do.

Q: What does the future hold for you and your business?

A:  I’m just thrilled to put my energies and time into this business along with our community for many years to come.

Q:  What is one piece of advice you wish you had as a new business member?

A: Quite simply: don’t bite off more than you can chew and give yourself some grace when you do.
